If the Suzuki affair, including the widely circulated video, has shown that Metropolitan Hilarion is gay, then why on those grounds alone has he not been removed from the episcopate? Surely this is incompatible with Orthodox teaching and expectations of a bishop? Regardless of whether it was blackmail or whatever else, the case revealed Hilarion living a lifestyle far removed from what it should be.

Well, the canons apply in ROC only to those without sufficient rank or political utility. Hilarion had both for two decades. Canonical enforcement has never been about moral consistency — it's a political instrument, deployed when convenient and shelved when not.

There is Hilarion the Great, there is Hilarion the New… And this one will enter the Synaxarion under the literal translation of his name — Hilarion the High, sorry, the Cheerful

The biggest issue here for me is how do I reconcile this with his music. Hilarion's St. Matthew's Passion is an epic masterpiece of classical-liturgical music. It's a mystery how can one compose something this beautiful while living such an ugly life.

The greatest art can come from a depraved soul. We must separate the art and the artist, but the artist informs the art.
